Destiny 2 - How to earn upgrade points

Get your hands on more upgrade points so you can unlock more abilities.

Destiny 2 does things a bit differently to how things were done in the original game, and the most obvious out of all these is how it handles abilities. Abilities are no longer unlocked by XP alone, this time you need to collect Upgrade Points in order to increase your Guardians power.

How to unlock more Upgrade Points in Destiny 2

Whenever you earn enough experience to increase your level, you will be able to unlock a new ability to use in combat, but only if you have an Upgrade Point to spend on your new skill. There is only a limited amount of Upgrade Points, which means you will need to go out of your way to earn them.

The best way to earn more Upgrade Points is to simply play through the campaign and earn experience. You can continue doing this until you reach the maximum level of 20, at which point you will no longer receive Upgrade Points. From here, you will need to go to each planet and look for a specific mission.

Every planet has a set of Adventures, some reward gear while others reward Upgrade Points. Always play the ones that reward Upgrade Points whenever you find them, that way, when you unlock your other subclasses, you will have enough to fill out the perk trees.

While you need to spend Upgrade Points to unlock your Jump, Grenade, and Class Abilities on your first Subclass, the second and third subclass only need Upgrade Points for their perk clusters. If you’ve read our guide on the fastest way to level up in Destiny 2, you’ll know that there are certain activities you should save until the end – Adventures aren’t one of them. If you come across an Adventure that rewards an Upgrade Point, while playing the campaign, take a quick detour to complete it!
