Animal Crossing fans think they've spotted Rover in the latest update trailer

May Day may see the return of an old friend in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Today's update trailer for Animal Crossing: New Horizons revealed plenty of exciting things coming to the game in the next few months, but keen-eyed fans have spotted a potential extra treat in store. While we were busy screaming over the addition of shrubs, other folks online noticed what could be the debut of Rover in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

For those new to the series, Rover is a blue-haired cat whose job in previous titles was to set up the game and establish the character model of the player. While we're certainly glad his feature-defining questions have gone out the window, we'd still very much like to see the cheeky fellow and his diamond sweater get a nod in New Horizons. He hasn't been officially confirmed, but Reddit user MrPigg14 spotted a certain someone poking around in the back of the May Day island footage.

That certainly looks like his signature sweater to us! You can check out the clip yourself by jumping to the 1:10 mark in the trailer. Nintendo, you can't tease us with an old friend like that! Given the house sign and campire he's resting next to, there's a chance the May Day island is actually Rover's, and we're getting a chance to hop over for a visit. Not sure why he's set up a maze with pitfalls, but each to his own. Clearly he had plenty of time to kill after quitting his job as a character identifier.

While we wait to see more of Rover, we'll have plenty of other stuff to occupy ourselves with thanks to the upcoming Nature Day event which adds nature-themed Nook Miles activities to partake in. We'll also be getting new visitors in the form of JollyRedd and Leif, who'll be bringing art pieces and new plants to purchase, respectively.
