To catch a Giant Water Bug in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’re going to need to know a few pieces of crucial information including when it spawns and where to find it. According to its Critterpedia listing, the Giant Water Bug spawns between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. in real time. Like the Tarantula, the Giant Water Bug is a night critter, so you’ll need to begin your hunt at night.

Next, you’ll need to know where to find the Giant Water Bug. As its name suggests, you can find the Giant Water Bug… in the water. To be more specific, the Giant Water Bug loves little ponds and streams. You can often see it swimming around on the water’s surface, or perched on the edge of the pond.

To grab it, you’ll either need to net it when it comes close enough to you in the water, or go to the edge where the Giant Water Bug is perched and swing your net straight down on top of it. To make things easier, you can catch quite a few on random islands when you redeem a Nook Miles Ticket. We experienced this ourselves as we hunted for Tarantulas.

We turned an island into a “Tarantula Island” and were surprised at the outcome. On the palm trees, Atlas Moths spawned more frequently. In the little pond and stream area at the center of the island, we saw an increase in Giant Water Bug spawns. It made for some lucrative bug hunting as Giant Water Bugs can be sold for 2,000 Bells a piece.

Sure, they’re not as valuable as a Tarantula (8,000 Bells) or even an Atlas Moth (3,000 Bells) but they’re easy to catch in large quantities. To recap, Giant Water Bugs appear between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. in small pond and stream areas. They’re easy to catch, and you can sell them for 2,000 Bells each, making them a solid way to farm a few extra Bells at night.
