How to catch an Atlas Moth in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Tips on how to net the elusive Atlas Moth in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

With April comes the addition of new bugs and fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, including the Atlas Moth. Unlike some of the new butterflies you might’ve seen fluttering by, the Atlas Moth is a bit trickier to find. Not only do you need to search for it at the right time, you’ll also need to know where it likes to hang out. To help, we’ve put together a guide explaining how to catch an Atlas Moth in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, new fish and bugs have been added to the game now that April has rolled around. Among these new creatures is the elusive Atlas Moth. Following its addition to the game, players have been struggling to catch this giant moth as there isn’t a whole lot of info to go on when it comes to where and when the Atlas Moth spawns.

Fortunately, we were able to catch one of these bad boys ourselves last night and we’re going to walk you through everything you need to know about catching an Atlas Moth! First, you’ll need to know the spawn time for the Atlas Moth. According to its Critterpedia listing, the Atlas Moth spawns between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. meaning you’ll need to wait until nightfall before attempting to track it down.

If you’re worried about not being able to catch an Atlas Moth before they disappear from the game, we have good news in that the Atlas Moth will be available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons from now (April) until September. Let’s move on to where you can catch an Atlas Moth. You won’t see these guys hovering around light sources like a common, boring moth.

Instead, the Atlas Moth likes to spread out its wings on tree trunks. This could be a fruit tree, a hardwood tree, or any tree with a trunk big enough to accommodate the Atlas Moth. It can be hard to spot the Atlas Moth as they tend to blend in with the trees at night.

Our recommendation is to walk through groves of trees slowly so as to not startle any Atlas Moths if there are any in the area. One updated tip we have is that if you make a "tarantula island" and leave the palm trees, Atlas Moths will spawn repeatedly on those trees, allowing you to farm them.

The Atlas Moth is worth 3,000 Bells should you decide to sell it, same with the Agrias Butterfly. Both the Atlas Moth and the Agrias Butterfly are the most valuable flying insects to be added through the April update, so be sure to keep an eye out for them while playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons!
