Though it has many little secrets to discover, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is, in most cases, a simple game about fishing, catching bugs, digging and developing your island. All of that pleasantry goes out of the window when turnips come to play, however. Daisy Mae’s weekly shopping trip is a tempting but confusing offer, so if you’re having trouble figuring out the turnip trade, we’re here to help. In our Animal Crossing: New Horizons turnip and Daisy Mae guide, we’ll explain how the turnip trade works, what you should do with turnips, and the prices you should be looking out for.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Turnips and Daisy Mae guide
Turnips are the stock market of the Animal Crossing world. The shortest explanation is that every week you’ll have the option to buy in and hope that you can then sell them at a profit. Want to know more? We’ll start off by explaining the basics of Daisy Mae and turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
In case you’re a complete newbie who’s seen everyone else enjoying their turnip time, we’ll take you through the whole process, starting with where to buy turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Where to buy Turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Once your village is developed enough, Daisy Mae will visit your island every single Sunday, between 5am and 12pm (midday). She’ll come bearing as many turnips as you’d like, with a new price each week, unique to your island. It’s up to you how many turnips you want to buy, Daisy Mae won’t put any restriction on you, other than that you have to buy them in batches of 10.
Turnips can be bought for prices ranging roughly from 90-120 Bells per batch. Make sure you take note of how much you spent on turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. You can also visit your friends islands to buy turnips from Daisy Mae there; a great idea if she’s selling at a lower price than on yours.
With a fistful of vegetables, you then have one week to sell the turnips you’ve bought. If they’re not sold by the following Sunday, they’ll spoil and go rotten, so even if it’s at a loss, you should sell them on the Saturday before to avoid losing all your money.
Can you store turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?
Here’s the other catch with turnips. Not only will they go rotten after one week, you also cannot store turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. By store we mean your house’s storage; you don’t need to hold them on your person for a full week, but you will need to find some space for them on your island.
If you’re looking to get into the turnip game big time, we recommend creating an empty plot of land in which you can dump a load of turnips each week. You can store up to 100 Turnips in a pile at once, so unless you’re going mad with your purchases, you shouldn’t take up too much space.
Can you plant turnips?
Sadly, no, you cannot plant turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Because the stalk market relies on players buying and selling turnips each week, there are no ways to produce your own like you can with fruit such as apples and pears. Instead, you'll have to store turnips on the ground or in your inventory.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons turnip prices and sale times
To sell turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll want to head to Timmy & Tommy at Nook’s Cranny (or the General Store, once upgraded). These two will buy turnips off you on any day of the week except Sunday. You cannot sell turnips on Sundays.
So here’s where the challenge lies. Timmy and Tommy will update their turnip sale price twice every day, once at midnight (12am), and once again at midday (12pm). You can speak to Timmy or Tommy to ask them their turnip prices when the store is open. Much like Daisy Mae’s prices, how much you can sell turnips for to Timmy & Tommy is unique to your island. It’s worth checking with your friends each day to see if they’ve got a good price going. If so, hop on over there and make some profits!
So how much should you sell for? It’s all a case of balancing the risk vs the potential reward. With six selling days, you’ve got 12 different turnip prices each week (assuming you can be around for the morning ones), and that’s without counting and friends’ islands. The aim is to buy turnips at a low price, then sell at a high one. Turnips can go for as little as 40 bells per stack of ten, or much as 600+ bells, meaning it’s possible to make massive profits if you play it right. However, if you sit around without selling even when a reasonable profit is there, you may run the risk of losing all your investment.
How to make money with turnips in Animal Crossing New Horizons
If you’ve been following the tips above, you should understand the turnip game in Animal Crossing: New Horizons pretty well. The basic method to make money with turnips is to check in with all of your friends (or use online resources like the Animal Crossing Turnip subreddit) each Sunday to see which island has turnips for the lowest price. Head there and stock up.
Then, each day of the week, check your turnip prices in the morning and in the afternoon, and get your friends with the game to do the same. As soon as you see someone with a reasonable profit, you can bundle over to their island and sell big. How much of a profit you aim for is up to you, but may also depend on how many friends you have that are able to check. Anything like a 100% increase is well worth going for, just make sure to leave a tip for the person who’s hosting such profitable prices.
Of course, if you're a time-travelling trickster, you can also jump your switch date ahead to check the future prices of turnips, but know that we'll frown at you a little and do a disapproving shake of the head.
Turnip calculator - predict your prices
If you're looking to plan ahead, smart Animal Crossing fans have already figured out that turnip prices fluctuate around fixed patterns each week. For the regular person, knowing which pattern you'll get isn't easy, which is why there are turnip calculators online that'll tell you what to expect. Head over to stalks.io by clicking here and enter the turnip prices you receive in the morning and afternoon each day. Keep track for a couple of days and the system will match you to one of the known patterns. You'll then be given a chart showing when any price spikes should occur on your island, as well as a minimum and maximum value to expect. You're still better off keeping in contact with several friends, but a turnip calculator is a great way to know when high prices will arrive on your own island.
The best day to sell turnips
As noted above, the price spikes your island has for turnip prices will change depending on the pattern you get. That said, there are a few days which are generally better than others. You should always check turnip prices on Monday, the first day of the week. This is because some turnip price patterns start with a peak on the first day before steadily falling. After that Thursday is usually the best day to sell turnips. Most patterns only peak at the latter stages of the week (to give you plenty of time to sell at a lower price.
