You can only catch Sturgeon in Animal Crossing: New Horizons from September until March. Provided you’re in that period, they can be caught all times of day, but only at a river mouth. If you’re not sure where that is, click here for our quick guide. The easiest way to find it is so follow a river along until it reaches the ocean, or to walk around the edge of your island.

Here are the key details about the Sturgeon in Animal Crossing: New Horizons:

  • When: All Day, September - March
  • Where: River Mouth (where the river meets the ocean)
  • Shadow Size: Massive
  • Value: 10,000 Bells

Usually on a beachy surface, the river mouth is the part that’s still between two parts of land, but the water begins to broaden outward. You need to fish here, rather than in the ocean at the end of the river. To catch a Sturgeon in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, we recommend crafting several pieces of bait, then heading to the river mouth.

Only throw one piece of bait in at a time, as catching a fish will scare off any others that are nearby. The Sturgeon has a massive shadow, one of the biggest in the game, so it should be very obvious when it has arrived for your bait. If the shadow isn’t a large one, either catch the fish or scare it off by sprinting nearby.

Once you think a Sturgeon has shown up, throw your line in ahead of the fish, then press A as soon as it pulls the fishing rod bobble underwater. If you time it right, you’ll soon have your very own Sturgeon in your hands! We recommend giving the first catch to Blathers at the museum, as it's always nice to see all your island's wildlife swimming around.

As noted above, the Sturgeon price in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a chunky 10,000 Bbells, so after donating to Blathers, we recommend selling any of your other catches if you don't want to display them in your house. The 10K bells price is for Nook's Cranny or the General Store, but once you've got C.J. on your island, he'll by fish for 1.5x the price Timmy and Tommy will pay, so take it to him instead.
