PlayStation download speeds cut across Europe as internet usage spikes

Sony have announced reduced download speeds on PlayStation as Europe goes on lockdown.

PlayStation download speeds are being slowed down across Europe as internet usage in the region spikes during the coronavirus pandemic.

As many countries across Europe implement widespread lockdowns, including France, Italy and the UK, people stuck at home have turned to the internet to fill their days. While Netflix has already promised to lower streaming bitrate in the region by 30%, gaming companies have not had to adjust much due to online gaming's relatively low bandwidth usage, thanks to small packet sizes.

However, with game downloads topping 100GB for the newly released Call of Duty: Warzone free-to-play battle royale, Sony are working together with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) across Europe to reduce the impact on the network.

"Playing videogames enables players all over the world to connect with friends and family and enjoy much needed entertainment during these uncertain times," said Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan in today's announcement. "We believe it is important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practicing social distancing and are becoming more reliant on internet access.

"Players may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads but will still enjoy robust gameplay. We appreciate the support and understanding from our community, and their doing their part, as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone."
