If you’re wondering how to craft a Fishing Rod in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ve come to the right place! Unlike items that require you to track down a Recipe first, the Fishing Rod is a little different in that you’ll be walked through the process of crafting it by Tom Nook.

Essentially, after the opening stages of the game when you’re able to freely wander about, you’ll want to make your way over to the Resident Services Building. Inside, speak with Tom Nook and ask him about his DIY workshop. He’ll give you a little rundown of the DIY Workbench, and then he’ll give you instructions to go find 5 Tree Branches to craft your first item.

Similar to gathering branches for firewood at the start of the game, you can pick up Tree Branches next to trees all around your island. Gather the requisite amount of Tree Branches, then return to Tom Nook. He’ll tell you to use the DIY Workbench that’s next to him, and then you’ll be walked through crafting a Flimsy Fishing Rod.

With your Flimsy Fishing Rod, you’ll be able to catch fish around your island, although this rod isn’t one that’s built to last. Fortunately, you can always craft another one by returning to the DIY Workbench and exchanging 5 Tree Branches for a brand new Flimsy Fishing Rod!
