Animal Crossing: New Horizons features more multiplayer features than ever before. Each island can now host up to eight players at the same time through Switch Online, letting you play co-op with more friends than ever. Party Play will also let multiple residents on a single island play together at once, with one nominated as the leader. If you want to access various crossover features between Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, including importing custom designs, you’ll also likely need Switch Online.

Unfortunately, Animal Crossing: New Horizons won’t support Switch Online Cloud Backup for save data, so make sure you protect that Switch carefully, even if you’re a subscriber to Nintendo Switch Online. Given the number of events Nintendo produces for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, we wouldn’t be surprised to see future updates to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, some of which could also require access to Switch Online, though that’s far from confirmed.
