Half-Life Collection free for everyone to celebrate Alyx launch

The entire Half-Life series is free on Steam until new VR game Half-Life: Alyx releases.

Valve has made the Half-Life Collection free to play for all Steam users as an early present in the run-up to release of their new VR game Half-Life: Alyx in March.

In a news post about the generous gift, Valve explains that: "Half-Life: Alyx is coming in March, and we are celebrating early by making all games in the Half-Life Collection FREE to play for Steam users, from now until the day it launches!"

The download pages for Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two show the game as being free and the offer "ending in 2 months". Though no release date for Half-Life: Alyx has been confirmed after it was delayed until March late last year, this free offer timing means it must be coming out sometime in the last week of the month.

According to Valve, Alyx will take place midway through the collection and Valve suggest you catch up on the full story with another playthrough, even if you already own all the games.

"Half-Life: Alyx is set before the events of Half-Life 2 and the episodes, but the games share characters and story elements," the announcement reads. "The Half-Life: Alyx team believes that the best way to enjoy the new game is to play through the old ones, especially Half-Life 2 and the episodes, so we want to make that as easy as possible."

Are you excited for Half-Life: Alyx? Will you be taking advantage of this free offer for Half-Life Collection to play through them all before the new VR game comes out?
