Can you visit other regions in Pokemon Sword and Shield?

Addressing whether you can travel to regions from previous Pokemon games in Sword and Shield.

Pokemon fans picking up a copy of Pokemon Sword or Pokemon Shield have been asking about visiting other regions in the game. While some previously released Pokemon titles have given you the ability to travel between regions, Sword and Shield is a little different. To help explain this further, we’ve put together a guide answering the question of whether you can visit other regions in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

The quick answer is no, you can’t visit other regions in Pokemon Sword and Shield. While playing, your exploration is limited to the Galar region, which (to be fair) is pretty massive. Galar has a large railroad system, allowing you to travel between towns. However, the trains in Galar won’t take you anywhere beyond Galar, at least for the time being.

If you’ve been looking for a special train or boat to take you beyond Galar, the unfortunate news is that there isn’t one. Again, there’s no way to travel beyond Galar in Pokemon Sword and Shield. In the future, it doesn't seem likely that Game Freak will add DLC to Pokemon Sword and Shield that expands the explorable regions.

Instead, if you want to explore regions like Kanto, you may be better off purchasing a copy of Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee.
