The full number of Pokemon in the Pokédex for Sword and Shield.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is available, leading many to ask how many Pokemon are available. While it’s obvious that new Pokemon are being introduced in Sword and Shield, it’s unclear how many Pokemon from previous titles are returning. To help, we’ve put together a quick guide breaking down how many Pokemon are in Sword and Shield.

In Pokemon Sword and Shield, the Pokédex shows there are 400 total Pokemon. Of these 400 Pokemon, 80 are brand new and introduced through Sword and Shield (with Sword and Shield having a few version-exclusive Pokemon). Doing the math, 320 Pokemon from previous games are returning in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Prior to the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield, the games sparked controversy over the lack of a national dex. While there are a lot of Pokemon in Sword and Shield, there are also a lot that haven’t been included and cannot be ported from other titles like Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. Again, there are 400 total Pokemon in Sword and Shield, 80 of which are new.

As of right now, Game Freak has no plans to add more Pokemon in the future, so what you see right now is what you get.

Now that you know how many Pokemon are in Sword and Shield, be sure to read through some of our previous guides including starter evolutions in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
