Does the PS5 have a disc drive?

Answering the question of whether the PlayStation 5 will include a disc drive.

One of the most popular questions gamers have about the PS5 is whether or not it includes a disc drive. With companies like Microsoft offering an all-digital option for Xbox One, it makes sense that gamers would worry about Sony potentially abandoning the disc drive. To set the record straight, we’ve put together a quick guide addressing whether the PlayStation 5 will have a disc drive.

To answer the question of whether the PS5 has a disc drive the answer is yes, it does. How do we know this? Well, several reports have cited the PlayStation 5’s capability to read physical game discs like this one from Wired posted back in April.

A new report recently emerged from Wired on October 8 that continues to emphasize the fact that yes, the PS5 will offer a disc drive capable of reading physical games, it will not be an all-digital device. If you’re hoping to watch Blu-ray movies with the PS5, the good news is that the console’s optical drive will be able to do that as well.

“Physical games for the PS5 will use 100-GB optical disks, inserted into an optical drive that doubles as a 4K Blu-ray player,” the post from Wired confirms.

Other questions gamers have about the PS5 center around backwards compatibility. While Sony has made it clear that the PS4 and PS VR games will be backwards compatible with the PS5, it’s unclear whether older games like those on PS3 will also be included. Given that the PS5 has an optical drive, we imagine these confirmations from Sony indicate the ability to play physical PS4 games on PS5 rather than having to rely entirely on a digital library.

Of course, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the PS5, so be sure to check back as we’ll be posting updates on the console as Sony reveals new information. In the meantime, what do you think? Are you happy to hear the PlayStation 5 will have an optical drive capable of reading both physical games and 4K Blu-ray discs? Are there any other features you’re hoping the PS5 will have?
