In Link’s Awakening, there are several locations for you to explore. While some of these are important as they’ll reward you with items like the Hookshot, others are optional, like the Color Dungeon. You can beat the game without ever completing the Color Dungeon, though it’s worth seeking out due to its rewards and overall design. Having a hard time pinning down the exact location? How to get into the Color Dungeon in Link’s Awakening

As noted above, the Color Dungeon is an optional location in Link’s Awakening. To access it, you’ll need to make your way through the game until you’re able to acquire the Pegasus Boots. To get the Pegasus Boots, you’ll need to complete the Key Cavern dungeon and its boss, Slime Eye. With the Pegasus Boots, you’ll be able to use a dash that’s great for attacking, and knocking down certain items. Notably, a book that rests on top of a bookshelf in the Mabe Village library.
It’s here that you’ll be able to complete the steps needed to get into the Color Dungeon, but again, you’ll need the Pegasus Boots before you visit the library. With the Pegasus Boots, you’ll want to dash towards the bookshelf with the book on top in order to knock the book down. Inside the book, you’ll find instructions in the form of numbers and directional arrows.
If you’ve been attempting the sequence inside the library, you’re actually in the wrong spot. After viewing the book, you’ll want to head over to the Graveyard and towards the area with five graves clustered together. When pairing the directions from the book, it becomes clear you need to push these graves in a certain order.
Starting from the upper right corner, the graves can be numbered 1 through 5. The clue in the book is as follows:
- 3 - Up
- 4 - Right
- 5 - Up
- 2 - Left
- 1 - Down
When translating these instructions to the graves themselves, you’ll need to do the following inside the Graveyard. Note the directions seem to reverse, as you’ll start with “Down” rather than “Up” as written in the book.
- At the grave near the bottom right, push down.
- At the grave near the bottom left, push left.
- At the grave near the top left, push up.
- At the grave near the top center, push right.
- At the grave near the top right, push up.
When done correctly, you’ll reveal a staircase leading under a grave and into the Color Dungeon. By completing the Color Dungeon, you’ll be able to pick between the Blue and Red Mail rewards. The Blue Mail increases Link’s defense while the Red Mail increases Link’s attack.
