Blair Witch, like most modern games, uses an internal auto-save feature to keep track of your progress. As you explore Black Hills Forest, the game will regularly save and update. Whenever you see the signature Blair Witch symbol in the bottom right corner of your monitor, you’ll know that the game is auto-saving.

With the auto-save, all progress will be stored up until that point. You can trigger auto-saves fairly easily in Blair Witch. For example, whenever you explore new areas and reach key points in the story. Interestingly enough, there’s also a “manual save” feature available in Blair Witch, though the way it works is a little odd.

To elaborate, the game informs you that when you write a manual save, you’re simply creating a permanent copy of the game’s previous auto-save. As such, it doesn’t keep track of progress made in-between checkpoints. While it can be nice to have both an auto-save and manual copy of that auto-save, it’s important to keep in mind that this manual save is simply an extension of the game’s auto-save system.

To manual save, all you need to do is bring up the in-game menu. After the menu is up, select “Save” and proceed to create your manual save. As you’re doing this, the game will let you know how manual saves work as well, reminding you they’re extensions of the auto-saves and don’t track progress made between checkpoints.

While we were playing Blair Witch, we liked having both saves just in case something crazy happens, like we toss our controller in terror and accidentally close the game. Unlikely? Sure, but you can never be too careful!
