Impressive character design on display in new Detective Pikachu trailer

What a wonderful world of Pokémon we have to look forward to when Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10.

A new trailer for Detective Pikachu dropped today that puts a more direct focus on the film’s impressive design, rather than the integrated humor and plot. In the “What a Pikachu World” trailer, we’re able to get a closer look at different Pokémon types spread out across varied environments from verdant forest scenery to the streets of Rime City. We also get some adorable moments thrown in with Detective Pikachu himself, including one where he’s pulled into a reluctant embrace by Psyduck.

What helps set Detective Pikachu apart from other Pokémon films is the fact that it’s all done in live action, with Pokémon brought to life through digital rendering. Rather than look overdone, the CGI helps immerse the viewer in a world quite different from our own. When the first trailer was released, some were hesitant over the hyper-realistic designs of Pokémon like Mr. Mime or Jigglypuff.

While Mr. Mime has retained his creepy vibe throughout (and is thankfully absent from the latest trailer), the designs of other Pokémon have grown on many prospective moviegoers. Based on the visuals alone, Detective Pikachu is shaping up to be a must-see film for Pokémon fans.

Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10, and we’re curious to see if the writing holds up as well as the Pokémon themselves. After watching the trailer, what are your thoughts? Are you eager to check out Detective Pikachu in theaters, or are you still on the fence in regards to the idea of realistic Pokémon? Let us know down in the comments below!
