The latest trailer for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice gives a gameplay overview of FromSoftware’s latest title.
The trailer introduces the world of Sekiro, a fantastical rendition of the sengoku, warring states era of Japan’s history. We’re introduced to the protagonist, known only as The Wolf, and his missions to recover his stolen young lord.
While there’s plenty of gameplay footage out there for Sekiro already, this latest trailer goes into further detail about each of the prosthetic arm attachments available for the wolf. The axe can be used to smash through enemy shields, opening them up to attack, while a spear can be used to drag enemies into close range.
Like things a little more spicy? You can use the flame vent to set targets in front of you on fire. On the defensive front, a metallic umbrella can be deployed briefly to block heavy attacks you don’t know if you’ll be fast enough to dodge. As a shinobi you’ve got plenty more tricks up your sleeve, too. Shurikens and firecrackers can be used to stun enemies or their mounts, letting you close in for a strike.
This may be a FromSoftware game, but combat here is markedly different from Dark Souls or Bloodborne. You and your enemies have a posture meter which, when broken through deflections and attacks, opens up the chance to land a death blow for high damage. Stealth is also an option, with the ability to eavesdrop and take down enemies instantly if you manage to sneak up on them
At heart this is still a FromSoft title though, and that means plenty of deadly, deadly boss fights and a unique death mechanic. The Wolf can revive himself once after death to battle again, but there's a big risk to it. If you fall again without landing a death strike or reaching a checkpoint idol then you’ll lose resources and suffer as of yet unannounced consequences in the story.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is due to release this Friday, March 22 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
