The best game soundtracks for workouts

Get in shape while getting down to the groove of our favorite game soundtracks for workouts.

Nier: Automata

Nier Automata won Best Score/Soundtrack at 2017’s The Game Awards, and even if you’ve not played 2B’s adventure it’s easy to see why. The full OST is complete with atmospheric and emotional slower tracks, but for the purpose of a workout we recommend booting up a compilation of the album’s heavy hitters (see the embed below) to inspire your efforts.

Tiny Barbarian DX

A fairly straightforward action platformer, Tiny Barbarian DX understandably slipped under many people’s radars back in 2013. However, the Switch re-release in 2017 drew our attention thanks a ludicrously generous OST released alongside it. The Tiny Barbarian DX: Ultimate Chiptune Compilation offers over three hours of upbeat retro tunes to see you through even the hardiest gym session. The full soundtrack is available on Spotify, Bandcamp or YouTube, so take your pick.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

While not our personal cup of tea, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’s angsty electro-metal OST comes up a lot in discussions of good workout music. If you’ve got some pent up anger and want to picture yourself as a cyborg ninja slicing up robot baddies, who are we to deny that fantasy. And honestly, we’ll take any excuse to pop another PlatinumGames title onto lists.

Shatter

The soundtrack to Breakout-inspired Shatter is perfect gym fodder, and a brilliant set of tunes overall. Honestly we’d recommend picking up the game the music alone, but the lengthy, 5+ minute instrumental tracks are great for maintaining a tempo too. The whole thing is available on both Spotify and YouTube, too.

Street Fighter - Guile’s Theme

It really does go with anything. Jokes aside, fighting game and brawler soundtracks are excellent choices for the gym. Recent Street Fighters have plenty of fantastic tracks, but it’s also worth checking out the OSTs to older titles like Streets of Rage 2 for some bass heavy tracks to get you pumped up.
