A closer look at Hades from Supergiant

What's the deal with the newest game from Supergiant, Hades?

At The Game Awards 2018, Supergiant revealed their newest project called Hades. Developed by the Supergiant team and published by Epic Games, Hades is described as a “roguelike dungeon crawler” where you “defy the god of death as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld of Greek myth.”

According to the FAQ on the Supergiant blog, Hades is available right now as an Early Access title with an entry price of $19.99. Due to its status in Early Access, Hades is only playable on PC and won’t release to other platforms until it graduates from Early Access. Hades is the first time Supergiant has dabbled in the Early Access format, with the developer noting it’s “a living game in active development.”

As such, gamers can expect continuous updates to the game, and the ability to leave direct feedback by joining the official Discord server. Other games from Supergiant include Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre. If you’ve played one or more of these games, the art style and gameplay of Hades will undoubtedly feel familiar as it boasts the traditional Supergiant style.

Speaking of Pyre, Supergiant revealed they began work on Hades approximately a month after Pyre released back in July of 2017.

“Each time we’ve completed a project, we’ve found ourselves eager to dive into something new. This time around, we wanted to make something that combined aspects of all the best ideas we’d picked up over the course of working on our three previous games: the immediacy and accessibility of Bastion, the rich atmosphere and combat depth of Transistor, and the big and colorful cast of characters and forward-moving story structure in Pyre,” Supergiant explained.

Not only is Hades the first time Supergiant is experimenting with Early Access, it’s the first time they’re releasing a game based on outside story elements. As highlighted by the game’s announcement trailer, Hades is based on Greek mythology with source material based on a variety of elements “from Homer to Hesiod.”

Using roguelike elements, no two runs of Hades will ever feel the same. In roguelike games, combat is one of the main focus. Each time you play, you’ll learn more about the game. Even though your progress is wiped upon death, you’ll be able to get farther and farther the more you play the game. Hades comes off more like a “roguelite” in certain areas, especially there’s no traditional turned-based strategy.

Instead, Hades offers action-packed, hack-and-slash combat that comes off as fast, fluid, and responsive. With Supergiant at the helm, the roguelike and roguelite elements are balanced by an engaging story with over 20 different characters to acquaint yourself with. “Each time you play, you’ll combine the divine might of various Olympian gods with your own, brave nefarious new challenges, and unravel more of the story featuring our award-winning art, audio, and narrative.”

To get a feel for the art and audio of Hades, Supergiant posted the full soundtrack to their YouTube channel. Alternatively, you can play Hades right now by purchasing the Early Access version for $19.99 on the Epic Games store. Be sure to check back, as we’ll be posting more about Hades as we dig through the content available in Early Access.

Additionally, you can read the full FAQ post on the Supergiant blog, and contact the team on their website or Discord with any questions you might have. So, what do you think of Hades from Supergiant? Are you planning on buying the Early Access version, or are you going to wait until the game is released on other platforms outside of PC?
