How to get Celebi in Pokémon GO

Complete the latest Special Research assignment, A Ripple in Time, to get Celebi in Pokémon GO.

Pokémon GO players have been wondering how to get Celebi in Pokémon GO now that Niantic has confirmed the Pokémon's release as of August 20. Originally only available to participants of this year’s GO Fest in Chicago, Celebi is now available to all Pokémon GO players in the form of a Special Research project. According to the official announcement from Niantic regarding Celebi’s release:

“You can begin completing Special Research on Celebi at any time as long as you have done the third group of tasks related to the Special Research on Mew, and actively finish tasks related to both at your own pace.”

Essentially, Celebi is available to all Trainers in Pokémon GO who’ve completed the third group of tasks assigned in the Special Research project for Mew. To help elaborate on the process further, we’ve put together a quick guide on how to get Celebi in Pokémon GO!

How to Get Celebi in Pokémon GO

To get Celebi in Pokémon GO, you'll first need to unlock Celebi's Special Research assignment.

To get Celebi in Pokémon GO, Trainers will first have to complete the third tier of assigned tasks featured in the Special Research project for Mew. To unlock “Research” assignments in Pokémon GO, players need to spin PokéStops. PokéStops offer various “Field Research” tasks alongside “Special Research” tasks at random.

To view your Field Research and Special Research assignments, tap the binoculars icon at the bottom right corner of your screen to open a new page. On the first page is your list of active Field Research projects and your current Research Progress. At the top of this page, there’s another tab labeled as “Special” which you can tap to view your active Special Research Projects.

To view your Field and Special Research assignments, click on the binoculars icon at the bottom right corner of your screen in Pokémon GO.

Special Research differs from Field Research as Special Research plays out like in-game story missions and feature different task tiers that need to be completed. The first Special Research mission available to Pokémon GO players is called “A Mythical Discovery” and gives players the ability to get Mew in Pokémon GO.

By running through “A Mythical Discovery” and completing the third tier of tasks related to this Special Research project, players can then unlock the Special Research project for Celebi called "A Ripple in Time" (by spinning PokéStops for Field and Special Research). The third tier of tasks that need to be completed in A Mythical Discovery to unlock the Special Research project for Celebi include:

  • Reach Level 15
  • Battle in a Gym 2 times
  • Battle in 2 Raids

Note that you won’t get Mew after completing the third tier of tasks in A Mythical Discovery. This is because there are 8 tiers in total that need to be completed to get Mew in Pokémon GO. By completing three tiers, you’ll still have five tiers left to complete in order to get Mew. This is similar to the Special Research project for Celebi, A Ripple in Time, although the tasks at each tier will be different.

Field Research differs from Special Research, with Special Research assignments requiring several tiers of tasks to be completed before their reward Pokémon becomes available for capture.

The first tier of tasks for the Special Research project, A Ripple in Time, include the following:

  • Power up Pokemon 5 times
  • Battle in a Gym 2 times
  • Battle in a Raid

By completing all eight tiers in the Special Research assignment, A Ripple in Time, you'll unlock the chance to catch Celebi. When it comes to the capture process, we recommend stocking up on Berries (Razz, Nanab) and Ultra Balls as it can take a few tries to capture Celebi.

Note that you can increase your stockpile of Berries and Ultra Balls by spinning PokéStops (which drop Field and Special Research assignments), completing your Field Research assignments, and sending Gifts to your friends. Be sure to check back, as we’ll update this guide with the specific tier list of tasks needed to get Celebi and how best to complete these tasks in Pokémon GO.
