Maus

Probably the best tank in the game at the moment, we have the mighty Maus. What happens when you buff a tank to give it arguably best-in-class firepower, and undeniably best-in-class armor that’s a struggle to penetrate even with well-aimed Premium rounds? Well, turns out it gets pretty good. A little too good, maybe, as it’s being nerfed in Update 9.20. Ok maybe it’s too good by quite far. Scratch that, definitely so.

To put it frankly, the Maus is overpowered as far as I’m concerned. Even without angling its turret, the Maus’ turret face is impenetrable to the vast majority of standard rounds at Tier 10. When angling the turret, it can shrug off everything but Premium ammunition from Tier 10 Tank Destroyers, and even then it’s sketchy business. The 155mm of spaced armor along the side of the hull covering the existing 140mm of hull armor results in 295mm of armor. This means the Maus is impossible to detrack and penetrate with the same shot with anything but high-penetration AP variants such as Premium APCR or certain Tank Destroyers, and if the Maus angles at all then good luck to you.

You then have its firepower, which is obscenely good across the board. A devastating 490 alpha damage with over 2500 base DPM, and one of the best turret traverse dispersions in the game. The Maus simply doesn’t struggle to hit anything, and can shred anything it meets with incredible speed and consistency.

Although the Maus is being nerfed in Patch 9.20, It’s still probably going to be the strongest Tier 10 Heavy in the game. Its armor is staying more or less untouched, with the only change being to its ‘belly’ armor. Its armor values are the part of the tank that is overpowered in my books, as its effective armor values upon angling were crazy even before its huge buff, and it could certainly hold its own. Now, though, penetrating a Maus seems like an impossible feat that’s completely unrelated to the skill level of the Maus driver.

Instead, the firepower is being nerfed, which in my opinion was a fine buff. The old Maus was kind of lame, but that’s because it had absolutely nothing going for it except great armor. If it simply received a significant buff to its firepower and nothing else, the Maus would still be a solid competitor even now – it just wouldn’t have completely shifted the entire meta.

Other than that, my list is completed. I don’t think there’s much debate that could be formed around whether my personal picks are strong tanks or not, but do you perhaps think a different competitor should have taken their place? Which ones would you swap out, and why?
