PlayStation Orbis
The PlayStation 4 wasn’t always referred to as, well, PlayStation 4. There was a time when it went by another name. Back in the early days of production, before Sony revealed that they’d be sticking with the tried and true number system, the PS4 was known simply as “Orbis”.
Orbis was the name given to the development kits that were handed out to game developers. These PS4 dev kits were actually modified PCs using the AMD Accelerated Processing Unit – a CPU that was designed by AMD in cooperation with Sony.
Oddly enough, the Orbis name has stuck around, despite the PlayStation 4 receiving its official designation. The PlayStation system software is actually called Orbis, in honor of the original dev kit.
The PlayStation 4 is constantly changing and expanding with each update.
