PUBG's ELO is Getting an Overhaul

Prepare to have your ELO increase, or maybe decrease.

Starting this month, Battlegrounds’ ranking algorithm and ELO will be experiencing a variety of changes and updates. For Bluehole, this is a means to create a ranking system that more accurately represents skill, as opposed to its current state.

As it stands, reaching the top of the leaderboard in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is relatively easy and stress free for those with enough skill to do it. For the layman like me, getting to Top 10 is the real challenge, with chicken dinners being a fanciful dream.

The leaderboards currently allow someone with relatively few kills to remain near the top of the board so long as they achieve a win, while players with dozens of kills per game sometimes not even appearing on the overall Rating section.

While PlayerUnknown hasn’t revealed the exact weighting of kills vs wins in the new algorithm, there has been some discussions online regarding how this should be handled. Over on Mr Grimmmz' stream, the popular PUBG streamer suggested recently that kills should become exponentially more important the fewer players are left in the game.

Despite sitting with a respectable 30 kills and a K/DR of 15, ChubbyBear does not appear on the overall Ratings tab.

The reason behind this is that, as the game progresses, the risks involved in shooting and killing another player increases. With 10 players left alive in a circle, the other 8 can easily locate a player by gunshots alone.

Changes to the ELO rankings come as Battlegrounds experiences a leaderboard reset. This was the first of many planned resets that will be rolling out at the end of each month. Over on the PUBG Steam Community Page, PlayerUnknown stated, “We understand that these seasons may seem short, but for us to fully balance the ELO ranking system, we need to update frequently based on data from the previous seasons' rankings.”

Players are hoping that kills will receive an increase in importance that is reflected in the overall Rating.

The reset to the leaderbaords couldn’t come at a better time, as the recently delayed update will be arriving in a couple of days in the form of the Month 4 Update. One of the biggest additions to the game will be the Mk14 EBR, a Crate-only 7.62mm Assault Rifle
