How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor
To upgrade your weapons and armor in The Surge, you will need to visit an Operations center found at the start of every level. Within an Operations center is a machine beside the MedBay called the Gear Assembly, it’s this machine that is used to upgrade your weapons and armor.
To upgrade a weapon or piece of armor, navigate from the Crafting tab to the Upgrade tab. You will need to have already found the Schematic for a weapon and Crafted it before you can upgrade it.
Once highlighted, the right-hand side of the screen will show you the item, as well as information pertaining to what is needed to upgrade it, what damage it will do after being upgraded, and the Mark it is being upgraded to.
The Tech Scrap indicates how much Tech Scrap you need to upgrade the item, with how much Tech Scrap you have in brackets beside it. The higher Mark, the more Tech Scrap required. Below that is the material or components you need in order to upgrade the item and how many of them you require.
If you want to upgrade an item to Mark III, you will need the Mark III version of that material. You can learn all about farming for materials in The Surge in our guide.
Use the right-thumbstick or the Q and E keys to increase or decrease the Mark of the upgrade. Sometimes you can skip a Mark entirely, such as if you want to upgrade something from Mark I to Mark III, provided you have the necessary Mark III materials, you can skip Mark II.
When you have selected the Mark version you wish to upgrade your weapon or armor to, hold the Spacebar on PC, the A button on Xbox One, or the X on PlayStation 4 to complete the upgrade.
Upgrading weapons and armor can be a bit confusing when you first start The Surge, so take the time to look over the Gear Assembly machine so it no longer looks so foreign.
