Top 5 Places to Call Home in The Long Dark

The top five base locations you should consider calling home in The Long Dark.

Mountaineer’s Hut - Timberwolf Mountain

Our Bearskin Bedrool is warmer than the bed, and I'm sleeping with the fire going in the Mountaineer's Hut.

The Bad: It’s freaking cold in the Mountaineer’s Hut, and if you aren’t wearing some furs, there’s a good chance you’ll frequently have to battle sub-zero temperatures, even on lower difficulties. There’s also a wolf that likes to spawn on the lake a short way from you front door, and there are several bears that can spawn in just about any direction you decide to travel. The Mountaineer’s Hut is also considered an outdoor location (no loading screen as you enter), so you will never truly experience that warm, cozy feeling again.

I reached the Summit of Timberwolf Mountain at night. Still beautiful.

The Good: You must make the Mountaineer’s Hut your base at some point in your playing career of The Long Dark. Just outside your door you’ve got fishing, deer and rabbit spawns, and all the cattail stalks you could hope for. There are sticks for the extended fires that you’ll need, plus a fireplace and workbench in the Mountaineer’s Hut itself. Timberwolf Mountain is also home to the Summit, and the crashed plane means there is loot scattered all over the region for you. You’ll even find huge amounts of resources for crafting, making the Mountaineer’s Hut one of the more sustainable locations in the game. One that’s just crazy enough to be awesome.
