5 Best Tanks in Non-Tank Games

For when a lack of firepower just won’t do.

Mass Effect 2 – The M-44 Hammerhead

One of the gameplay elements from the original Mass Effect that players didn’t end up enjoying too much was having to slowly explore the surfaces of new planets in the Mako all-terrain vehicle. A process which started out relatively interesting, but which quickly became plodding and boring later on.

Fortunately, Mass Effect 2 did away with the Mako exploration bits, though fans were a little disappointed that developer BioWare had overcorrected by not including any vehicle-based gameplay in the core game. It wasn’t until the release of Mass Effect 2’s optional Firewalker DLC pack that BioWare made things right.

In the Firewalker DLC, players had to track down a group of enemy scientists on the surface of a distant planet, and they did so by quickly traversing the planet’s surface in the new M-44 Hammerhead hover tank. Unlike the Mako bits from the first game, piloting the M-44 Hammerhead actually felt really fun, mostly because of its speed but also because of its various weapon systems which allowed players to engage in thrilling vehicle-based skirmishes.

Sadly, the Hammerhead didn’t make a return appearance in Mass Effect 3, though there is always a chance it could show up in this year’s Mass Effect: Andromeda.
