How to Research and Upgrade Modules

Here’s how researching and upgrading modules works in World of Tanks.

How to research and upgrade a tank in World of Tanks can be confusing as there are a lot of different options that lead to many different results. Here’s our handy guide to help you understand how to research modules, how to upgrade modules, and what modules are worth purchasing!

What is a Module?

A module is a piece of gear for your tank, whether it's a new engine, turret, or even an upgraded radio!

A module in World of Tanks is an upgrade to your vehicle that must be researched and/or purchased. A new gun, a turret, or even shiny new tracks are considered modules. By slowly upgrading your current tank toward the next Tier level, you will be improving your tank’s overall performance while closing the gap between the next tank purchase as some modules are compatible with a higher Tiered tank.

Equipment is also available for purchase on each tank. However, these do not require Experience to purchase. Equipment can be extremely costly, but it is an investment worth making if you feel you are sticking with the tank for a long while. Equipment can be such things as Camouflage, reducing your tanks visibility; Ventilation, which helps increase your Crews performance by keeping them cool; and even a Binocular Telescope, increasing your view range by 25 percent. However, these pieces of Equipment are exceptionally costly, coming in at 500,000 Silver.

Before you can “Mount” or use a module, you must first research it and then purchase it. Think of researching a module as learning how it works, and then purchasing it as putting in the order to receive one.

How to Research a Module

Sometimes you have to research a module before you can purchase it. Researching requires Experience while purchasing requires Silver.

Before you can add a module to your tank, you must first research it using Experience. There are two forms of Experience: Combat Experience and Free Experience. Combat Experience is attached to a tank and is earned whenever that tank enters battle. Free Experience is accrued through using Premium tanks (but costs Gold to convert) and through combat as five percent of the total Combat Experience earned. Free Experience can be used on any tank from any nation, whereas Combat Experience is limited to the tank.

To find how much Combat Experience a tank has you will first need to Display the tank in the Garage and then look to the right of the screen above the stats. The Silver Star and numbers represent how much Combat Experience that tank holds.

To research a new module, click either the Research button on the right side of the screen when the tank is selected or right-click on the tank in the slots and select Research. You will be presented with a tech tree of all available modules that can be researched for the selected tank. The green boxes with silver stars indicate how much experience is required to research that given module. Research costs range from as little as 30 Experience up to more than 60,000 Experience. Once you click the green box and research the module, it will become available for purchase.

If a tank does not have enough Combat Experience, the Free Experience that is displayed at the top right of the Garage will be used instead, or in conjunction with, the Combat Experience. However, try not to use the Free Experience as it is a precious resource.

How to Purchase a Module

Some modules can be used on more than one tank, which is why you might not need to research them again, like the 40mm Pom-Pom on the UK Cruiser Mk 3 and 4.

Once a module is researched, you must purchase the module in order to install it in your vehicle. This can be done either through the Tech Tree or through the Garage screen. If you researched a new engine for a specific tank, click the engine on the appropriate tank and then click the newly researched engine. You will then be prompted to purchase the new engine for an amount of Silver. As soon as you purchase the new module, it will automatically be installed on the vehicle. You can switch around the modules through the Garage Screen or through the Tech Tree screen by right-clicking and selecting “Mount”.

Researching and purchasing modules in World of Tanks doesn’t have to be a complicated task. Take your time to get to know the Garage screen as well as the Tech Tree screen. Do some actual real-life research on what modules you think would be a good purchase for your tank before you spend any of your Combat or Free Experience. If you followed this guide, you should now know how to research and purchase a module in World of Tanks.
