Sonic Mania Plus races to launch in July

New characters, new courses, same red sneakers.

Sonic Mania, the first Sonic game in over a decade to truly get it right, is getting an expanded edition on July 17. Sonic Mania Plus will add a bunch of new material to the game, and there's a stylish new trailer below to tantalize you.

Chief among the additions are new playable characters Mighty the Aardvark and Ray the Flying Squirrel, each with their own unique moves. Also included is four player split-screen Competition Mode and an Encore Mode which takes classic stages and remixes them.

If you've already bought Sonic Mania, don't be upset. You'll be able to upgrade the game to include all this new material for $4.99, while a $29.99 physical retail release is targeting the die hard Sonic fans with a holographic cover, 32-page art book and - be still our crumbling retro heart - a reversible sleeve that makes the game look like an original Genesis release.

Sonic Mania Plus skids into our loving arms on July 17 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Switch and PC.

Dan has been playing games since the 1980s, and doesn't plan on stopping any time soon. Also, get off his lawn. You can contact him by email if you need to know exactly how to leave his lawn.
