The Escapists 2 Key Guide - How to Get a Plastic Key, Copy Guard Keys

Learn how to make plastic copies of each key in The Escapists 2.

If you plan on making a clean getaway in The Escapists 2, you’ll need to obtain guard keys to unlock and access certain parts of the prison. Of course, you can’t just take a guard’s key without facing consequences, so you’ll have to make a duplicate for yourself. This guide will briefly explain how to copy guard keys in The Escapists 2 to get the Plastic Keys required for your escape plan.

The Escapists 2 - Guard Key Guide

Before attempting to steal a guard’s key in The Escapists 2, you’ll need to do a bit of planning first. Each key in The Escapists 2 is color coded based on type. Different parts of the prison require specific colored keys. Here’s how each key color breaks down:

  • Red Key (Staff Key) - Accesses areas that only guards and staff can go.
  • Cyan Key (Utility Key) - Unlocks utility areas, such as the ventilation system or rooftop.
  • Yellow Key (Cell Key) - Unlocks prison cells during Lights Out.
  • Purple Key (Entrance Key) - Opens the locked one-way entrance doors during Lights Out.
  • Green Key (Work Key) - Opens work rooms, such as the janitor’s room. You likely won’t this key if you have a job.

Each guard will have a certain colored key, but it’s not the same for everyone. It’s important to note which guards have which keys in your game so that you can know where to find the keys you need later.

To know which guard has which keys, simply knock them out and search their inventory. Don’t take the key yet, though. If the guard wakes up and finds their key missing, you’ll be punished. Once you’ve seen which key a guard has, its icon should appear on the map for easy tracking.

The Escapists 2 - How to Make a Key Mold

To duplicate a guard key, you’ll need both a Key Mold and Molten Plastic. For the key mold, you’ll need a Wad of Putty, which can be crafted out of a Tub of Talcum Powder and a Tube of Toothpaste.

Once you have a Wad of Putty in your inventory, the next step is to briefly take a key from a guard. The putty is used for making an impression of the key, giving you a Key Mold to craft a duplicate guard key.

Find a guard who has the key that you need, and lure them away from the infirmary. Knock them out, then quickly search their pockets for their key. In the Crafting menu, put the Wad of Putty and the Guard Key in the crafting slots and press Craft. This will create a Key Mold of that specific guard key. Now, quickly return the original key back into the guard’s pockets before they wake up.

In the event that the guard is sent to the infirmary before you’ve replaced the key, drop the key on the ground and go hide in a locker or somewhere safe. Wait until the coast is clear and your heat level has gone down.

The Escapists 2 - How to Craft a Plastic Key

You’re almost ready to create a duplicate guard key. All you need now is Molten Plastic to pour into your new Key Mold. To create Molten Plastic, collect either a Comb or a Toothbrush, and craft it together with one Lighter.

Now, simply craft the Molten Plastic with the Key Mold you made earlier to create a new Plastic Key. You will also need to have a certain level of Intelligence to successfully craft a Plastic Key. Make sure to hide the duplicate in the Hidden Compartment inside your desk to ensure it doesn’t get taken.

Plastic Keys will loose durability as you use them, meaning you can only use a single Plastic Key to open doors about 10 times before it will break. The duplicate cannot be used for making another mold, so you’ll have to repeat the process again if you want another Plastic Key.

That’s it! Now that you know how to get guard keys and craft Plastic Keys in The Escapists 2, you have everything you need to access various doors and areas throughout the prison. While planning your escape, you may also want to note all of the prison routines in The Escapists 2.
