Atari joins tiny retro renaissance with mini arcade cabinet Kickstarter

First up: Centipede.

Atari has seen its old rivals Nintendo repackaging their old tech in smaller boxes and wants a piece of the nostalgia pie with mini arcade cabinets.

New Wave Toys are beginning production on a line of officially licensed arcade cabinets called RepliCades, one-sixth the size of the originals.

The first in the $50,000 Kickstarter selection is Centipede, with a 3.5” LCD screen and a 12” tall cabinet that has the full game ROM installed and a recreation of the original exterior art.

RepliCades apparently offer “smooth, lag-free gameplay” and the best part is that it’s all free because no coins are small enough to fit in the slots. Also you buy the whole thing yourself first for $160. That kind of stretches the definition of free.
