A recent news release from Telltale Games reveals the company has laid off around 25 percent of its total workforce. Telltale clarified that layoffs stem from the fact that they are “restructuring” the company. A move that will affect around 90 employees in total.
Telltale CEO Pete Hawley elaborated on the decision to let a large portion of the staff go, claiming it was based on making the company “more competitive as a developer.” The statement goes on to explain that the industry has shifted over the last few years, forcing the company to evolve.
While the news is certainly depressing for the men and women axed from Telltale, the restructuring reportedly won’t impact any previously announced Telltale projects. Additionally, Telltale says that it plans to move its internal development “over to more proven technologies that will fast-track innovation in its core products.”
Telltale joins companies that have restructured based on necessity. This includes Perfect World's shutdown of Motiga and Runic Games. Fortunately, Telltale will continue to develop titles, albeit with a much smaller workforce. What are your thoughts on the Telltale layoffs? Let us know down in the comments below.
