How to Complete the Grimm Troupe Quest in Hollow Knight

Below, we'll walk you through the process of completing the Grimm Troupe quest in Hollow Knight.

To complete the Grimm Troupe quest in Hollow Knight, you’ll need to exit the Troupe Master’s tend and equip Grimmchild. With Grimmchild equipped, you’ll now be able to spot the flames you need to collect on your map. Each flame represents a Grimm Troupe member. To collect these Grimm Troupe members, you’ll need to beat them to death with your Nail.

Once all three flames (Grimm Troupe members) have been collected, return to the Troupe Master’s tent in Dirthmouth. As you arrive in Dirtmouth, head into the Troupe Master’s tend and turn in the three flames (Grimm Troupe members) that you collected. With this done, the Troupe Master will inform you that you need to go back out and collect more flames before the final act.

Just as you did before, head out of the Troupe Master’s tent and ensure you have Grimmchild equipped. Open your map, and you’ll see three new flame locations. Head to those locations, collect each flame (Grimm Troupe member), then return to the Troupe Master’s tend in Dirtmouth. When you’ve collected 6 flames (Grimm Troupe members), you’ll trigger a boss fight with Troupe Master Grimm.

The first boss fight in the Grimm Troupe quest is with Troupe Master Grimm.

This battle can be somewhat difficult. His attacks deal 1 damage, and at the end of each phase, Troupe Master Grimm will transform into a swarm of bats. At this point, you’ll have some time to heal before he transforms again. Once you’ve defeated Troupe Master Grimm, he’ll send you out to collect the remaining flames (Grimm Troupe members).

Again, exit the Troupe Master’s tent, and have Grimmchild equipped. Open your map to spot the three new flame locations. Collect the flames, then return to the Troupe Master’s tent in Dirtmouth. At this point, you’ll need to head deeper into the tent. Upon doing so, you’ll find the Troupe Master hanging upside down. Use your Dream Nail on him to trigger the second boss fight.

Your second boss fight will be with Nightmare King Grimm. This fight is extremely difficult, so be prepared to die a few times while you get the hang of dodging Nightmare King Grimm’s attacks. His attacks deal 2 damage, and similar to his previous form, he transforms during the fight giving you the chance to heal. When you’ve defeated Nightmare King Grimm, the Grimm Troupe will leave Dirtmouth.

The only character left behind is Divine. Head inside Divine’s tent and interact with her. In doing so, you’ll have completed the Grimm Troupe quest.

Complete the Path of Pain to unlock new Hollow Knight lore.

Note that there is one more section of content included in the Grimm Troupe update that you can complete called “The Path of Pain.” The Path of Pain is a platforming challenge that can be found by heading to White Palace. When The Path of Pain has been successfully completed, you’ll unlock new lore for the Hollow Knight story.
