Back at E3 2017, Atari took to the stage to announce the development of a new console called the Ataribox. While the announcement excited many, Atari didn’t really go into much detail regarding exactly what the Ataribox would do. Now, the company has finally unveiled some new information about the mysterious console, although they’re still keeping many things under wraps.
According to this recent newsletter which Atari distributed to those who signed up for the Ataribox mailing list, the console’s design will evoke the “classic Atari feel” and will even include an option for either a glass or wood front panel. The console will sport four USB ports, an HDMI port, and an SD card slot, all of which (in Atari’s own words) suggest that it will have modern internal specs.
Lastly, Atari confirmed the Ataribox will be able to run both classic gaming content and current gaming content. Although, they didn’t provide specific details on what exactly that means.
During the tail end of the newsletter update, Atari said it knows fans are eager to learn more about things like pricing, release date, games, and hardware specs, but it wants to make sure it gets everything right, hence the slow and careful approach. However, the company also promised that more updates will be coming in the months ahead, so hopefully interested fans won’t have to wait much longer to learn more about this enigmatic new Ataribox console.
