How to Remove a Stuck Joy-Con Wrist Strap

Our first time with the Nintendo Switch resulted in 30 minutes trying to pry off a stuck Joy-Con strap.

On our first day with the Nintendo Switch, we experienced the worst thing that could possibly happen—the wrist strap to our Joy-Con controller got stuck and refused to come off. Granted, it was on account of our own foolishness. Unfortunately, this is the kind of thing that is bound to happen, as many of us are more preoccupied with the thought of playing games rather than the way that we’re attaching our Joy-Con wrist straps.

If you’ve managed to get your wrist strap stuck on your controller, check to see if you’ve attached the strap backwards. The proper way is to line up the plus and minus signs (plus to plus and minus to minus) on the controller and the strap. If you’ve done that, and find that there’s a bit of resistance when trying to take the strap off, we’re here to tell you this is normal.

Just hold down the black button on the back of the controller, flip the white lock button up near the straps if you've locked it, then firmly grip the strap as you slide it away from you. The first few times you do this, there will be a bit of resistance. However, as you use the straps more, the process of detaching and reattaching them will become easier.

If you’re anything like us and have managed to attach the Joy-Con controller and wrist strap on backwards, you’ll find it’s borderline impossible to remove. After messing with it, we found that in order to remove the improperly placed Joy-Con strap, you’ll have to flip the white lock switch into the lock position to remove some of the added resistance from it.

Once you've done this, grip the strap attachment firmly while pressing the black button on the back of your Joy-Con controller and (with extreme caution to avoid slicing your finger from the sudden release) pull back as hard as you can. If this doesn’t work on the first attempt, all we can tell you is to keep trying. Additionally, don't try to smash it or pry it off, as neither of these methods help. Just keep pulling to slide it until it releases. Trust us, it took us a painstaking 30 minutes to take it off.

We hope this has helped you with removing any stuck Joy-Con wrist straps from your controllers and if it did, be sure to share this with someone who might be having the same issue.
