With the announcement of the Mr. Shifty open beta, we decided to sit down and take a good look at what all the hype’s about. So far, it’s proven to be an adrenaline shot of everything we love about games like Hotline Miami and Superhot. It features top-down, fast-paced, tactical combat that is only accentuated by its teleporting anti-hero dressed in a trench and a fire-red baseball cap.
Meet Mr. Shifty. A time-manipulating agent whose ability to infiltrate buildings is only topped by his talent for starting huge commotions. His assistant, Nyx, has a job that can only be pulled off by one of the greatest operatives of all time. In case you were wondering, that’s definitely you.
In the beta, we revealed that this job doesn’t rely solely on stealth. In fact, it all depends on skill. While the controls to Mr. Shifty are simple, you won’t be able to get very far unless you’re using every strategical move to stun, trick, confuse and straight up pummel your enemies. Break through doors, teleport across the room, pick up objects and use them as weapons in your quest to pull off the most epic heist.
With each level, comes new challenges that will push your newly developed combat skills to the limits. You’ll face off against evolving enemies in environments that may or may not work to your advantage. Tactically wipe out assailants with rapid fire weapons in a room full of towering bookshelves, or push unsuspecting adversaries out of the windows of a narrow hallway.
Most of the fun lies in the fact that there’s no single way to approach combat in this game. Mr. Shifty is a man of many talents, one of them being his uncanny ability to weasel out of hostile situations unscathed. If you want to participate in the Mr. Shifty open beta, you can sign up here.
