Skyrim is free on PC and Xbox One this weekend

And half price if you want to keep playing.

"Skyrim, eh? Never heard of it." If we had a penny for every time we'd heard that... we'd be skint. Still, if you somehow haven't played Bethesda's seminal RPG, this weekend you can actually do it for free.

That's because The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition is going to be free to play through Steam on PC and Xbox One (for Gold members) this weekend.

If you want to keep playing it after that, you will find the full game on sale - 50% off on Steam and discounted on Xbox Live, too.

If you make substantial progress in the free version, you'll be able to keep playing with that savegame in the full version should you decide to upgrade.

If you haven't played Skyrim, damn, you're in for a treat. This is the classic Bethesda go-anywhere RPG where you're given a main quest but generally speaking you'll probably just pick a direction on the compass, go off and explore.

You can fall in with thieves, vampires and crazy mages, explore mines and endless loot-filled caves, not to mention read thousands of pages of lore through the countless books you find.

You'll also finally understand that "Fus Ro Dah!" meme that got you all confused back in 2011. Godspeed.
