Summer Game Fest 2023: New game trailers and announcements

Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Prince of Persia, and more -- catch up on everything covered in Summer Game Fest 2023!

The summer of games shows has arrived, kicking of with last night’s Summer Game Fest 2023! Geoff Keighley’s trailer-loving monster was feeling so gluttonous that even Netflix promos managed to sneak into the mix, but that avarice did mean we got to enjoy a serious glut of new game announcements and updates.

Missed the show? Not to worry, we’ve rounded up the most exciting announcement from Summer Game Fest 2023 below for you to scan through, including a new Prince of Persia, Mortal Kombat 1, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and more!

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

First up was a slick trailer for a new Prince of Persia game in which the titular prince has been kidnapped, leaving a new character the hero. When the gameplay kicks in, it looks rather like a Metroid Dread style revival but with more melee action and time manipulation. Count us in. It releases January 18th, 2024.

Mortal Kombat 1

Next was a look at NetherRealm’s reboot of the infamously violent fighting game series. The first Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay trailer showed off some fairly spectacular combos and fatalities. We also get plenty of looks at new "Cameo" assist powers in which fighters call in support from another fighter. There was also an interview with creative director Ed Boon, who explained a bit more about this new timeline for the series.

Path of Exile 2

Want an alternative to Diablo 4? Free-to-play RPG sequel Path of Exile 2 got a new gameplay trailer, with a promise of more information on July 18th.

Exoprimal

You'll be able to gun down dinos as a robot Ryu thanks to this crossover between Exoprimal and Street Fighter 6. Mecha Guile is also on the way, with the update to Exoprimal planned to arrive in August.

Dead by Daylight

Now for the surreal. Dead by Daylight’s previously announced Nicholas Cage DLC got some gameplay, and the actor himself came onto stage to talk about his part in the game. He’ll be playing a “heightened” version of himself who believes he’s entered the game to star in a movie.

Witchfire

We got a brief teaser for “dark fantasy roguelike shooter” Witchfire, which joins early access on September 20th.

Crossfire: Sierra Squad

PS VR2 owners got a little taste of something to look forward to courtesy of a trailer for Crossfire: Sierra Squad. The VR FPS will feature over 60 campaign missions and supports up to four players in co-op.

Remnant 2

The sequel to Remnant: From the Ashes looks prepared to offer intense co-op combat and environments that cover both fantasy and sci-fi. It releases July 25th on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Sonic Superstars

Sega came in with the announcement of a new 2D adventure starring Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. The game will support up to four players in co-op. New powers include 2.5D effects which let sonic run up the background or even shift perspective to 3D temporarily.

Honkai: Star Rail

Honkai: Star Rail, the sci-fi title from Genshin Impact studio miHoYo, will come to PS5 in Q4 2024.

Lies of P

The pinocchio-inspired steampunk soulslike game will release on September 19th this year. There’s a demo available for Lies of P on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox now.

Sand Land

Bandai Namco debuted a surprise new game in which players will use vehicles to explore a desert land as the young Fiend Prince Beelzebub. It’s based on a manga from Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.

Throne and Liberty

NCSoft and Amazon’s upcoming MMORPG Throne and Liberty got trailer. You can sign up for the game’s tech test if you want to try it early.

Warhaven

Releasing in fall 2023, Warhaven is a medieval fantasy combat game from Nexon. It’ll be part of Steam Next Fest in later June, when you can try the game for free.

Party Animals

Party Animals looks to be an entertaining game about cutesy animals beating each other senseless. It releases September 20, 2023.

Crash Team Rumble

Next up we got another look at Crash’s multiplayer bash. You can fight in teams for Wumpa Fruit from June 20. 

Alan Wake 2

Remedy Entertainment showed off some gameplay for Alan Wake 2, focusing on the recently announced playable character Saga Anderson. In it, the FBI agent explores an eerie abandoned woodland shack where she encounters a supernatural threat.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2

You won’t need to face the Tyranid threat alone when Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 releases. The latest trailer from Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment revealed co-op support for up to three players.

Yes, Your Grace: Snowfall

Kingdom management returns in a sequel that’ll once again see your decisions of support and investment sow the seeds of success or disaster for a medieval kingdom.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando

Here’s an odd one. John Carpenter – he of The Thing and Halloween cinematic fame – has put his name to some kind of zombie/mutant shooter being created by Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is bringing out the big guns now. The latest trailer for Larian Studios’ RPG introduces a new character, Lord Enver Gortash, who will be voiced by Jason Isaacs.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

One of the biggest games of the show was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Geoff brought out studio Creative Director Bryan Intihar to talk about the game’s villains, including more information on Venom. It’ll release exclusively on PS5 on October 20th.

Palworld

Open-world Pokémon with guns might sound like a reductive description, but you try seeing anything else in the latest trailer for Pocket Pair’s multiplayer survival crafting game. See if you can spot just how many designs in the trailer stray suspiciously close to existing Pokémon this time. Palworld enters early access in January 2024.

Black Desert: Land of the Morning Light

Following that was a trailer for Black Desert’s next major expansion. Land of the Morning Light will launch for the popular MMORPG on June 14th.

Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria

A new Lord of the Rings title likely hoping to avoid Gollum’s recent shame. This one is a survival crafting game set in the dwarven mines. The trailer is voiced by Gimli’s silver screen actor John Rhys-Davies.

Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis

Why won’t anyone return Sephiroth’s calls? Find out in Final Fantasy: Ever Crisis, a mobile release on the way to iOS and Android. Pre-registration is available now, with a closed beta for Android running until June 28th.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Spirit and survivor unite in this fantasy action game from Vampyr developer DontNod. Travel the world and banish spirits together when it releases in late 2023.

Like a Dragon Gaiden

Following the success of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon: Isshin, the next Yakusa spin off title is Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. It’s on the way November 9th.

Under the Waves

Take a deep breath, because our next game is traveling deep into the blue. Under the Waves seems to follow a worker tasked with undersea maintenance operations who begins to unusual and surreal events. The trailer gives of strong Moon vibes. It’s releasing August 29, 2023.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare & Warzone

A sharp tonal pivot came next as we got a trailer of the next season for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone. It kicks off on June 14th.

Fae Farm World

Dizzy yet? Because here’s another sharp turn to a cutesy farming sim with magical flair. Develop a homestead then head out to explore magical realms alone or with your friends. Coming to PC and Nintendo Switch on September 8.

Marvel Snap

The very excitable Ben Brode, Chief Development Officer of Second Dinner, stopped by the Summer Games Fest 2023 stage to talk about Marvel Snap’s biggest update. That was followed by a comedic trailer featuring actor and voice actor SungWon Cho.

King Arthur: Legends Rise

Fantasy and monsters return to the show with a CGI trailer for King Arthur: Legends Rise. It’s a “squad-based RPG focused on hero collection” coming to PC and mobile.

Wayfinder

Summer Game Fest 2023 treated us to a new trailer for Wayfinder, the free-to-play action RPG by the creators of Darksiders Genesis. It’s coming to PC and PlayStation, with early access due to kick off this summer.

Stellaris Nexus

Paradox Interactive had a handful of trailers for us, starting with Stellaris Nexus. It promises to condense the experience of a 4X multiplayer game into the space of an hour. A bold claim indeed!

Space Trash Scavenger

That was followed by Space Trash Scavenger, a procedural space-based survival game that’ll let you build up a blocky space rig as you harvest material from surrounding asteroid fields and derelict spaceships.

Star Trek: Infinite

The Paradox period concluded with a trailer for Star Trek: Infinite which featured the Borg. It promises to bring “the Star Trek universe into an experience not before had.” Which is definitely an odd turn of phrase. A full reveal is set for Picard Day, June 16th.

Twisted Metal

Not a game, but as it’s an adaptation, we’ll let it slide. It’s a our first look at the Twisted Metal movie, starring Anthony Mackie as John Doe and Will Arnett (Samoa Joe) as Sweet Tooth. No sign of the cars yet though.

Lysfanga: The Time Shift Warrior

Back to the digital realm with the intriguing hack-’n’-slash game Lysfanga. It looks a lot like Hades but with the ability to fight alongside your past selves. Working alone but not alone will allow you to take on far more enemies than you might otherwise think possible.

Immortals of Aveum

Single-player magic FPS Immortals of Aveum had another trailer at Summer Games Fest 2023. It shows off a gigantic mech you’ll need to scamper over as it’s being boarded. Cue explosive magic and cinematic sequences which look like quite a lot of fun.

Fortnite

We’re closing in on the end now with a trailer for Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3, nicknamed Wilds. It looks like we’ll be riding dinosaurs and exploring lost temples, and, er, meeting Optimus Prime? Only in Fortnite, hey?

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

And finally, Summer Games Fest 2023 wrapped up with a trailer for the next part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake. Get a look at Cloud in action alongside the likes of Tifa, Aerith, Barret, Yuffie, and Red XIII in the new footage.

And that’s a wrap! Summer Game Fest 2023 may be over but there’s still plenty to come thanks to the Future Games Show and Xbox showcase taking place this weekend.
