Our eight most-anticipated April video game releases are included below. There’s no guarantee that they’ll all be winners, but they’re definitely worth keeping on your radar in the days ahead.
Meet Your Maker (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)
- Release date: April 4
From the creators of Dead by Daylight comes a unique asymmetrical dungeon-raiding and base-building game. Construct your own joyously trap and monster-laden bases, or spend your time diving into those made by others. The raiding mixes Doom-like visuals with multiple runs of limited ammo and acrobatic grappling, but it’s the base building that could prove the longer-term draw. It’ll be available as a PS Plus game at launch.
Minecraft Legends (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch)
- Release date: April 18
The next Minecraft spinoff offers an easy introduction to strategy gaming. The Piglin hordes are invading the overworld, so it’s up to you to build up a fortress and rally together creep mobs to fight them back. Minecraft Legends also has team-based multiplayer at its core, letting you beseige another side's fortress while attempting to shore up and defend your own.
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores (PS5)
- Release date: April 19
Aloy’s DLC outing sends her down to Los Angeles to face a new Horus threat. Forbidden West’s Burning Shores expansion will be exclusive to PS5, apparently so that developer Guerilla can incorporate enormous battles and more complex environments.
Tin Hearts (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch)
- Release date: April 20
Created by members of the original Fable development team, Tin Hearts is a Lemmings-style puzzle game in which you guide a troupe of clockwork soldiers through household environments. A generation-spanning narrative runs alongside the game, and there’s also VR support for those who want to tinker with their tin toys in a more immersive manner.
Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch)
- Release date: April 20
The chance to brew pixelated beverages to soothing, lo-fi sounds returns this month. Coffee Talk 2 will take us back to the midnight cafe for a chance to meet and talk with characters old and new. Emotional conversations will no doubt abound as you connect with the troubles of your customers through the medium of caffeinated drinks.
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (Switch)
- Release date: April 21
Nintendo’s bundled remake of the first two Advance Wars titles finally arrives this month after a lengthy postponement. You’ll be able to sign up with the Orange Star nation once more and take control of different COs with unique powers. Alongside the two campaigns are online and local multiplayer, war room challenges, and a level editor to let you make custom maps.
Dead Island 2 (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)
- Release date: April 21
Not content to leave Aloy as the only character exploring LA, Dead Island 2 unleashes the zombie masses within the home of cinema for utter first-person carnage. As you punch and gun your way through the undead hordes in solo or co-op play, you’ll be able to enjoy (if that is the right word) the game’s complex zombie dismemberment and destruction systems.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S)
- Release date: April 28
Cal Kestis continues his outcast adventures in the sequel to 2019’s Fallen Order. Expect more Soulslike-lite gameplay with plenty of platforming challenges and puzzles along the way. Survivor promises to introduce some intriguing enemies to the mix, including a near-indestructible Gen’dai bounty hunter.
