Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fusing mechanic revealed in new gameplay footage

Link will be able to fuse items together to make new weapons and vehicles as he explores the world.

Nintendo has released 10 minutes of new gameplay for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The new gameplay segment, hosted by series producer Eiji Aonuma, demonstrates one of the highly anticipated game’s core new features: fusion. In the first direct gameplay segment shown off for the Breath of the Wild sequel, Aonuma shows off the ability to fuse multiple objects together to create new weapons. Check it out in the footage below:

Was that 10 minutes already? We still have so many questions! There will be plenty to discover over several rewatches, but the fusion mechanic is already exciting enough. Attaching a boulder to the end of a tree branch will make it more durable, while sticking elemental items onto your arrows will grant them extra effects.

The use of monster parts and ingredients has also been expanded. In the footage we see Keese Eyeballs used to creating homing arrows. Stick a puffshroom to your shield and enemy attacks will trigger a cloud of distracting smoke that lets you perform a sneak attack. Myriad combinations await.

Fusing isn’t limited to weapons, either. Those vehicles seen in previous trailers? Players will be able to design and build them for themselves by fusing together different components. The design and placement is entirely up to players, too, with Link's new Ultrahand power letting him adjust the position and connection of objects. It looks like there will be plenty of room to craft unusual, interesting modes of transport.

Link appears to have access to some kind of sheika fan machine which can propel vehicles along the ground or even through the air. A battery indicator is clearly visible too, granting limited charge to the powered effects.

Finally, the rumored Tears of the Kingdom OLED switch was confirmed, arriving on April 28. Arriving alongside the release of the game next month, Nintendo will release a The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pro Controller and carrying case.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will release May 12th on Nintendo Switch.
