Aliens: Dark Descent

What is it?

A top-down squad based shooter packed with Xenomorphs. Players will guide a group of soldiers in real-time as they fend off multiple alien forms as well as operatives from the sinister Weyland-Yutani Corporation on Moon Lethe. The game also promises “horrifying creatures new to the Alien franchise.” You’ll be able to upgrade both your home base and the soldiers in your crew, adjusting abilities, weapons, armor, and perks.

When is it coming?

2023 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

Flashback 2

Summer Game Fest 2022 new games announced

© Microids

What is it?

An unexpected followup to an old-school sci-fi action-adventure game from 1992. Members of the original development team have been brought back to work on the sequel, which will include motion-captured animations and take players to new locations like Neo Tokyo.

When is it coming?

Winter 2022 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. 2023 on Switch.

Witchfire

What is it?

A dark fantasy first-person shooter from Polish studio The Astronauts. Not technically new, but we haven’t heard much about Witchfire since its reveal at The Game Awards 2017. Our first look at gameplay looks a bit like Doom with magic and old-school weapons as the player blasts through demonic enemies with revolvers, bolt-action rifles, crossbows, and an arsenal of spells.

When is it coming?

Early Access in Q4 2022 on PC (Epic Games Store).

Fort Solis

What is it?

A thriller-action game by new studio Fallen Leaf which is set on a Mars colony. Something sinister has gone wrong in this Martian settlement, and it seems the player will be tasked with finding out what. The game will feature voice actors Troy Baker (The Last of Us) and Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2) who both sounded very excited to be involved in the project.

When is it coming?

Unknown on PC (Steam).

Routine

What is it?

A spooky first-person sci-fi horror game featuring juddering robots. It’s set on a “Luna base designed around an ‘80s vision of the future.” Again, not technically a new reveal but, given the game was announced nearly decade ago, we won’t blame you for having forgotten. It’ll feature music by Mick Gordon of Doom and Wolfenstein fame, though we wouldn’t expect quite so many crunching guitar riffs here.

When is it coming?

Unknown on Xbox and PC.

Stormgate

What is it?

A free-to-play real-time strategy game from former Blizzard devs who worked on the WarCraft and StarCraft franchises. It sees humans duking it out against beefy demonic aliens. Aiming to make RTS more “social”, It’ll support co-op in the campaign and other modes as well as competitive multiplayer and creative tools.

When is it coming?

Unknown – a beta is expected in 2023 on PC.

Highwater

What is it?

An indie adventure-strategy game set post climate apocalypse. Players explore a flooded world, gathering resources and working together with other survivors stuck outside the walls of the elite-held Alphaville..

When is it coming?

December 2022 on PC (Steam)

Goat Simulator 3

What is it?

The followup to the madcap and bleat-filled physics-sandbox game, Goat Simulator. Don’t ask what happened to Goat Simulator 2. The trailer itself had a bit of fun by emulating Dead Island 2’s iconic beach-runner trailer only to smash its usual format apart with jetpack-strapped goats.

When is it coming?

Fall 2022 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

Layers of Fears

What is it?

A remake of the Layers of Fear series into one big and spooky horror collection. Developer Bloober Team – which produced the jump scares and spooks of The Medium and Blair Witch – has rebuilt the first two Layers of Fear games with all their DLC for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Along with the freshened up (yet no less fear-inducing) visuals, there’s also the promise of extra story elements added to each game that will “cast a new light on the overarching narrative” of the titles.

When is it coming?

Early 2023 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

The Last of Us multiplayer game

What is it?

A multiplayer-focussed game set in The Last of Us universe. It’ll feature a new cast of characters, but beyond that we really don’t know much beyond the fact that Naughty Dog has referred to it as their “biggest online experience” yet. More news on the project is expected next year.

When is it coming?

Unknown.

The Last of Us Part 1

What is it?

A “definitive version” remake of the original The Last of Us by Naughty Dog. It’ll bring the full story of the original game and its Left Behind DLC to PlayStation 5. It’ll use the original performances for the first game, but with the look rebuilt “from the ground up” with new AI, animation systems, and support for 60 frames per second.

When is it coming?

September 2, 2022 on PS5, later on PC.
