Horizon Forbidden West: How to dye armor

Dye armor in Horizon Forbidden West by collecting Blooms and visiting major settlements.

Aloy can dye armor in Horizon Forbidden West after you collect certain resources. She’ll comment on the capability any time you pick up an appropriate plant, but the game won’t teach you where to take them. In this guide we’ll explain how to dye armor in Horizon Forbidden West so you can shake up the color palette on your favorite armors.

To dye armor Horizon Forbidden West you need to visit a dyer merchant in one of Horizon Forbidden West’s major settlements, such as Scalding Spear or Plainsong. They’re indicated by a mortar and pestle icon, so can be easily located on the map.

Speak with a dyer merchant and you’ll be able to check the available alternate colors available for all armor sets you currently own. Some armors have lots of colors available, while others can’t be changed at all.

Before Horizon Forbidden West will let you dye armor, however, you’ll need to both unlock the dye recipe for that color and collect the required resources. You’ll get dye recipes for completing lots of different quests, with one of the earliest available for beating the Pit Master at the Chainscrape Melee Pit.

The resources needed to complete dye recipes are Blooms, with the following applying to different dyes:

  • Azure Bloom
  • Crimson Bloom
  • Golden Bloom
  • Midnight Bloom
  • Pale Bloom
  • Verdant Bloom

Blooms are found all over Horizon Forbidden West’s map, with each one pertaining to a different sort of biome. Make sure you grab any you come across to build up a stash before you need them to dye armor.

That’s everything you need to know about how to dye armor in Horizon Forbidden West. While we’re talking about applying colors, you should also learn how to use Face Paint in Horizon Forbidden West. For everything else, head to our hub page for the game and have a browse.
