Sony reveals PSVR2 headset design

Our first proper look at the PS5's VR headset.

Sony has revealed the look of its next-generation VR headset, the PSVR2.

We were given a good look at the shape of the PSVR2 controllers already, and Sony has previously detailed many of the specs for their new VR headset. However, today marks the first time we’ve seen how the headset will look alongside the new controllers.

To mark the new reveal, Sony released a new PlayStation Blog entry covering the stylistic and functional decisions behind the headset. In black and white, the PSVR2 matches the base color palette of the PS5 console, but Sony also wants to highlight the designs “orb” look, which “represents the 360-degree view that players feel when they enter the virtual reality world”. According to the post, the PS5’s design team already had the PSVR2 in mind, leading to the matching look of both.

In terms of functionality, the headset includes lens an adjustable headband that looks similar in style to the Quest 2’s Elite Strap add-on. The design also retains the original PSVR’s audio jack and the headset scope, which allows the user to adjust the distance of the goggles from the face for both comfort and easy removal.

Another new feature for the headset are adjustment dials to match different eye spacings. Impressively, it’s also lighter than the original PSVR despite its added feedback motors. The design also features a vent which Sony states is designed to stop lenses from fogging up during play.

The reveal also shows off the PSVR2 controllers in what we can assume is their final, black and white color schemes. Much like the PS5 console and DualSense controllers, the PSVR2 will include tiny PlayStation symbols on the front and back faces.

We still don’t know when the PSVR2 release date will be, but Sony reassures eager VR enthusiasts that development kit are out in the wilds and being worked on by various studios. We’ll have to wait for further announcements this year regarding the device’s planned release window.
