Mortal Kombat 12 teased by NetherRealm Studios producer

An image shared on Twitter appears to accidentally 'leak' the existence of the next brutal fighting game.

The existence of Mortal Kombat 12 has been ‘leaked’ by a NetherRealm Studios producer in an image posted to Twitter.

NetherRealm Studios senior production manager Jonathan Andersen shared a photo to Twitter on Thursday, January 27, seemingly just highlighting Mortal Kombat and Injustice artwork on his desk.

Look a little more closely, however, and it’s easy to spot a file named MK12_Mast… on his monitor. In addition, the email shown on his screen appears to be a warning, with the text “not share any part of this video,” clearly visible. In addition, it makes reference to fans searching the internet for clues, and ends by warning the recipient to “take extra care with this material.” A subtle hint, it could be said.

Conveniently placed files and text are visible in the monitor at the top right of the screen.

The image was deleted within 10 minutes of being posted. Given the signs included, however, it’s believed it was shared intentionally to tease the production of the next title after NetherRealm’s hugely successful Mortal Kombat 11.

Until now, NetherRealm has been quiet regarding their future projects, leaving speculation open as to whether they would continue the superhero-led Injustice series. However, publisher Warner Bros.’ parent company AT&T attempted to sell off its games division in 2020, and has been making moves to restructure aspects of Warner Bros. As a result, the future of the Injustice series has been left somewhat in limbo.

The strong single player story and tense multiplayer fights meant Mortal Kombat 11 proved immensely popular. As of July 2021, the game had sold more than 12 million copies across all platforms. While the original release only arrived on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, the Ultimate Edition release also saw the game ported to the Nintendo Switch. It also received a next-gen boost for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in November 2020. After the game's launch, NetherRealm released a raft of licenesed DLC updates, adding characters including Spawn, the Terminator, and Robocop.
