Halo Infinite campaign story missions not replayable at launch

Don't worry, replays will eventually be made available.

With the launch of Halo Infinite’s campaign on December 8 comes questions like whether or not you can go back and replay your favorite story missions and chapters. Unfortunately, replays won’t be available immediately at launch, though that option will be made available in the future according to a statement made to The Verge by 343 Industries associate creative director Paul Crocker.

Halo Infinite campaign story missions not replayable at launch

Unlike other Halo games, Halo Infinite doesn’t offer an easy way to go back and replay story missions or chapters at launch. While this may be frustrating for Halo fans who enjoy doing just that, there’s good news in that 343 Industries plans to make replays available in the future.

With 343 Industries still working on this, an exact date on when this will happen has yet to be revealed. Speaking with The Verge, 343 Industries associate creative director Paul Crocker explained:

“We haven’t announced a date but that is being worked on. We want to have replay that works well, and when you have a more open game, it gets a lot trickier. So we made a decision to improve the quality of the single-player campaign to ensure that, as a foundation, that it’s as strong as it possibly could be so that we could then add the other features back in.”

As Crocker noted, the game’s open world makes it harder to offer replays compared to other Halo titles. Fortunately, the game’s open world does offer ways to return to most areas, which is great for exploring and snagging any collectibles you might have missed – those areas just won’t offer any story mission elements once you’ve completed them.

Speaking of collectibles, if you’re intent on getting all of them right away at launch, you’ll want to keep in mind that you can’t return to explore areas from the opening two story missions off Zeta Halo after you’ve completed them.

Speaking with Polygon, an Microsoft representative elaborated on this, stating:

“The postgame does give you the option to keep exploring the wider environment, but for missions like the first two, where you’re not on the ring yet, you can’t replay from the same save file. You’d be able to get any remaining FOBs, targets, [and] audio logs, but the main story missions would not repeat.”

You may be able to create a new save and start over from the beginning in order to go through those missions again, but with no replays on story missions at launch, there’s no easy way to go back to these story missions once you’ve started working your way deeper through the campaign unfortunately.

Not only will Halo Infinite not offer story missions replays at launch, but campaign co-op and the game’s Forge mode also won’t be available until 2022. After learning that Halo Infinite won’t offer story missions replays at launch, we’re curious to hear your thoughts on the situation.
