Attending a tournament can be an intimidating experience, especially if you’re new to the competitive scene. Super Smash Bros. is an intense enough game already, so knowing how to keep your head cool amid a crowd and focus on the game isn’t easy. Thankfully, there are experienced heads out there like Pikachu star ESAM willing to share their experience.
In this Crash Course episode, ESAM talks through attending your first tournament event and what you should be focussing on when you head to a local competition. The biggest key takeaway? Focus on playing well rather than winning. Being the best takes time, so you shouldn’t attend early events expecting to beat everyone you come across.
Beyond that, the best way to feel comfortable at tournaments and to improve your play is to make friends while you’re there. And if you arrive with friends of your own, try to play everyone other than them. You can compete with your friends any time you like, a tournament is a chance to meet new style of play and push yourself further.
