Fortnite adds MLK speech event for anniversary of March on Washington

Players can listen to Dr King's 'I have a dream' speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in a recreation of 1963's Washington DC.

Martin Luther King, Jr. will appear in Fortnite to deliver his iconic "I have a dream" speech as part of a virtual exhibition to accompany the March on Washington anniversary.

Epic has teamed up with TIME Magazine's March Through Time (along with American Family Insurance, the DuSable Museum of African American History and the Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr.) to recreate the August 28, 1963 speech in a custom map made by Fortnite Creative builders.

"March Through Time teleports players to D.C. 63, a reimagined Washington, DC," the description for the new event reads. "Built by ChaseJackman, GQuanoe, XWDFr, and YU7A, travel to the Lincoln Memorial and United States National Mall, where Dr. King gave his iconic 17-minute speech for Civil Rights. The experience extends with museum-inspired points of interest, and collaborative mini-game quests you complete with others. These activities progress players through the experience and bring to life important themes of Dr. King’s speech: we move forward when we work together."

All sounds pretty good so far, yeah, got all the hits in there. MLK Jr's iconic "I have a dream" speech has been cited as one of the turning points of the civil rights movement in 1960s America, so it's cool that Fortnite's mostly young audience can perhaps learn about or experience it in a way that is closer to their modern day understanding of the wo-

"Completing the challenges related to Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement will unlock a D.C. 63 spray for your Locker," the description continues.

Ok, this is a bit weird now. Gamifying a pivotal moment of the Civil Rights movement is a very gamer moment.
