Mario Golf: Super Rush - How to Backspin, Topspin, and curve shots

Learn how to curve shots or apply backspin and topspin in Mario Golf: Super Rush.

Mario Golf: Super Rush teaches mechanics like backspin and topspin very slowly in its solo adventure mode. So if you’re looking to step up your skills quickly, we’ve put together a quick guide explaining how to Backspin, Topspin, and curve shots in Mario Golf: Super Rush. Take note and you’ll be thrashing your rivals in no time.

To use Backspin in Mario Golf: Super Rush, you need to tap the B button when setting the initial shot power.

For a regular shot, you’ll press A to start the bar rising on the side of the screen, then tap A again to stop it at the power level you want. To use Backspin instead, tap B to stop the power bar at the level you want. To apply Super Backspin you need to tap B twice quickly when selecting power. You should see text reading Backspin or Super Backspin appear over the power bar. The ball will glow with red electricity/fire when it lands.

Backspin will encourage the ball to roll backwards when it lands, but how far it rolls (if at all) will also depend on the angle of a shot. A ball landing from a sharp vertical drop will be more affected by backspin, while a low shot is likely to just slow from backspin. Plan your shots carefully and you can roll a ball backwards into the hole when you land on the green.

How to use Topspin in Mario Golf: Super Rush

To use Topspin in Mario Golf: Super Rush, you need to double tap the A button when setting the initial shot power.

For a regular shot, you’ll press A to start the bar rising on the side of the screen, then tap A again to stop it at the power level you want. To use Topspin instead, double tap A to stop the power bar at the level you want. You should see text reading Topspin appear over the power bar. The ball will glow with blue electricity/fire when it lands.

Topspin will encourage the ball to roll forwards further when it lands, making it ideal for covering extra ground on the way to the green, or for countering a strong wind that could shorten your shots. Use it sparingly though, as it’s easy to run balls too far and miss the green when you use Topspin in Mario Golf: Super Rush.

To recap, the Backspin and Topspin controls are as follows:

  • Backspin: Tap B when selecting power
  • Super Backspin: Double tap B when selecting power
  • Topspin: Double tap A when selecting power

How to curve shots in Mario Golf: Super Rush

You can vary curve strength from one to three arrows by tilting the left analog stick.

To curve shots in Mario Golf: Super Rush, you need to tilt the left analog stick during the second phase of shot setup. This is extremely useful for avoiding obstacles like trees, rocks, and pokeys.

After the shot gauge bar raises for the first time and you determine shot power (along with Backspin or Topspin), the bar will raise again, passing through several segments. By angling the left analog stick in each segment, you can apply a curve to your shot during different parts of its flight time. The number of segments visible on your shot gauge depends on your character’s Spin rating. The more you have, the more you can precisely control a shots across its flight time.

The degree of curve you apply depends on how much you tilt the stick. The strength ranges from one to three arrows, visible on the shot gauge segment. Tilt the stick more or less depending on where you want the shot to curve.

You can also curve shots up or down (or even diagonally) to help them pass over obstacles. A higher shot will be more affected by wind and roll less far, while a low shot will be less affected by wind and roll further.

That’s all there is to know about how to use Backspin and Topspin in Mario Golf: Super Rush, as well as how to curve your shots. It takes a lot of practice, but you can pull off some seriously impressive finesse shots if you master these skills.
