The next installment in the Call of Duty series will return to World War 2 later this year according to reports verified by Eurogamer.
Codenamed Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard, the next game is being developed by Sledgehammer Games, the studio responsible for the series' triumphant return to historical settings in 2017's Call of Duty: WW2.
Since 2017's return to the series' roots, CoD has skipped around the timeline of war with a rehash of Modern Warfare and a continuation of the Cold War timeline in Black Ops.
However the series also now has a longstanding battle royale mode in Warzone, which continues to add themed content alongside annual game releases instead of needing a new purchase to continue playing multiplayer. Warzone is already set for a reboot back into a 1980s version of its Verdansk map as a tie in for Black Ops Cold War, though it is unclear if it will also see a similar makeover when Vanguard arrives.
