Tools degrade over use in Valheim, shown by the bar underneath the icon in your inventory. The more degraded the tool becomes, the less effective it will be. While it can become useless when entirely worn out, your tools won’t ever break, making it valuable to repair them.

To repair tools in Valheim you first need to craft a workbench. This invaluable bit of kit will be your go-to place for crafting important bits of equipment, so make sure you build one as soon as possible. To craft a workbench you need ten pieces of wood, which should be easy to rustle up in the opening stages of the game.

Select the hammer from your inventory to and open up the crafting menu and you should be able to craft a workbench so long as you have the wood. It’ll need to be placed indoors, however, so make sure you’ve also got an enclosed space with a roof.

Once you have a workbench set up, you can repair tools by interacting with it and clicking the hammer icon on the left side of the menu. This will repair a tool for free, so keep clicking until everything you use is fixed.

Much like tools, you can repair weapons in Valheim by approaching your workbench, interacting with it and clicking the hammer icon on the left side of the menu. As before, this will repair a random damaged item in your inventory, so you'll just have to keep repairing until the weapon you're fixing is done. In this manner, weapons are exactly the same as all your other tools.

Because you can only repair tools and weapons in Valheim at a workbench, we recommend that you place one in all the major buildings that you establish. You don’t want to make your way across the map only to realise you can’t repair items without travelling back to the start. Thankfully, because workbenches are so cheap to set up, there’s little reason not to do so wherever you place a building.

Now that you know how to repair tools in Valheim you can move on to upgrading your workbench. For more Valheim guides, visit our hub page for the viking survival game.
