Monster Hunter World monster mounting guide

How to mount a monster in Monster Hunter World.

Fighting the beasts in Monster Hunter: World can be intense, and you’ll need every advantage that you can get as you take on the most vicious giants that the New World has to offer. One of the best ways to get out of attack range while still dealing loads of damage to monsters is to mount them and attack from their backs. This can be tricky to do, so here we’ll go over everything you need to know about how to mount a monster in Monster Hunter: World, and stick around as long as possible.

How to Mount a Monster in Monster Hunter World

Mounting a monster in Monster Hunter: World is all about using the environment around you to your advantage. First, you’ll need to lure the monster close to a ledge that you can climb up. You then need to be ready to move fast, as you won’t have much time before it joins you up on the ledge. Climb your way up to the top of the ledge, and then face the monster. Wait for it to get close, and then jump and attack by pressing Triangle. This should cause you to mount the beast, giving you a new way to attack it, but it only works some of the time. Try again if you didn't quite connect.

If you're an Insect Glaive wielder then this part is just laughably easy for you as you pole vault your way into the air and then slam down on anything from above. Once you're on the monster's back it's time to do the damage by hammering Triangle, but beware as the monster tries to chuck you off.

While riding the beast, the control reminders in the top right will change to prompt you with a few different options. The default button to keep tapping is Triangle to do lots of small stabs with your dagger, eventually after doing enough damage you'll do one big swing with your main weapon which will put the big lad on its side for some more kicking. However while riding, you'll occasionally get a prompt to hold R2, which will cause your character to brace itself against the monster. If you miss this prompt the monster will shake like a dog and you’ll lose a ton of Stamina, which determines how long you can hold onto the monster and attack it.

You might also see the monster squaring up to scratch you off whichever body part you're clinging onto and stabbing away it. Like the hold tight prompt, the edges of the screen will flash red to alert you that something's about to happen and if you're on its head or back or tail it might try to smash into a wall or slam its tail to get you off. You can avoid this by moving the left stick in another direction to hop onto another body part to keep stabbing away. Once you've stabbed long enough you'll get the charge prompt for your final smash and then it's up to you what to do once they're out cold on the floor for a few seconds.
